  Pamban Bridge

This Pamban bridge is founded in Tamil Nadu's Rameswaram which is literally the south-eastern tip of Indian Country. Rameshwaram is an Island itself and it connects to mainland India across this centurial old sea bridge.

Pamban Bridge

The Pamban bridge is located 14.8km away from Rameswaram bus stand. You can reach this bridge by government operated buses or private vehicles. You can either take the railway route or a road route which runs with it to get to Rameswaram.

The 2.2km length bridge linking the Rameswaram (Island) and the mainland of India is the longest bridge in India constructed over a bay. It is also called as Pamban Bridge. Similarly the railway SCISSORS bridge connecting the island is noted for its peerless opening to pass the ships through the sea.

There are many more places to visit in Rameshwaram.

It's an engineering phenomenon that evokes admiration. Many can forget a train trip on the Pamban bridge With 143 piers, gauging 2 km between the landmass and the islend, it's the alternate longest ocean bridge in India after the 2.3km Bandra- Worli ocean link on Mumbai's western seacoast.

Pamban bridge is a stake bridge, that is, it has structures that project horizontally into space, supported only on one end.

German mastermind Scherzer designed the central part of the bridge that opens up to allow ferry movement. On an average, 10 to 15 boats and small ships pass below the bridge every month.

The Pamban bridge was the only link between Rameswaram and the landmass until 1988 when a road transport bridge, running parallel to it, was costructed. Before, it used to transport hundreds of pilgrims everyday to the Island.
